Metonymy is the reference to small object as if it were the whole thing.
This is a speech style commonly used, with affection, or as insult. It looks at one part of the body and names the whole person by it. It looks at one character trait and names the whole person by it
Eg. Come here, blue eyes.
Eg. Hey, blabber mouth
Eg. Lend me your ears – means listen to me
Eg. Tell the press – means tell the journalists who broadcast news
Jesus used this speech style several ways
He referred to the whole body by naming one part of the body
He referred to a whole object by naming one part of it
He gave a small concrete example of a large concept
a man shall leave his father and mother and cleave to his wife and they twain shall be one flesh
Behold my hands and my feet, that it is I myself
consider the ravens for they neither sow nor reap and God feedeth them
even the hairs of your head are all numbered
except those days should be shortened there should no flesh be saved
Give us this day our daily bread
God knoweth your hearts
have ye your heart hardened?
he hath sent me to heal the brokenhearted
he that dippeth his hand with me in the dish, the same shall betray me
hereafter shall ye see the son of man sitting on the right hand of power
I sent my messenger before thy face
if he shall say in his heart, My lord delayeth his coming
if thine eye be evil, thy whole body shall be full of darkness
if thine eye offend thee, luck it out
If thy hand or thy foot offend thee, cut them off
Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me
it is easier for heaven and earth to pass than one tittle of the law to fail
let him which is on the housetop not come down to take anything out of his house
let these things sink down into your ears
let this cup pass from me
Let your loins be girded up and your lights burning
men’s hearts failing them for fear
out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water
Out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaketh
settle it in your hearts not to mediate what ye shall answer – I will give you a mouth and wisdom
take no thought for your life, what ye shall eat, neither for the body what ye shall put on
the Son of man shall be delivered into the hands of men
the soul is exceeding sorrowful even unto death
the very hairs of your head are numbered
they shall gather together his elect from the four winds
they shall lay hands on the sick and they shall recover
This night thy should shall be required of thee
This people honoreth me with their lips but their heart is far from me
when thou doest thy alms, do not sound a trumpet before thee
when thou givest alms, let not thy left hand know what thy right hand doeth
when ye fast, be not as the hypocrites of a sad countenance for they disfigure their faces
ye devour widow’s houses
Ye know not what hour your Lord doth come
your inward part is full of ravening and wickedness
